Dr. Gayatri Gogoi’s professional journey is a compelling example of how scientific rigor, innovation, and social responsibility can converge to create lasting impact. A Professor of Pathology at Assam Medical College & Hospital and an Honorary Scientist with ICMR, she has dedicated over two decades to advancing cancer diagnostics, genetic research, and preventive healthcare in India.
Her academic excellence is reflected in extensive training in oncopathology, molecular diagnostics, cancer stem cell research, and clinical sequencing of rare diseases, with advanced exposure at Harvard Medical School, ACTREC, and Tata Memorial Hospital. Her key research domains include breast cancer, gall bladder cancer, blood cancers, and vaccines, addressing some of the most pressing cancer burdens in the country.
A defining milestone in her career was her BBC-featured discovery of an extremely rare genetic mutation identified in the world’s largest hereditary blind family from Assam. This breakthrough brought global attention to genetic research emerging from Northeast India and demonstrated her leadership in translational molecular pathology.
At AMCH, Dr. Gogoi was instrumental in establishing the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory, significantly strengthening cancer diagnosis and personalized treatment. Her Self Breast Examination Demonstration Model, now a registered Government of India design, reflects her belief that early detection tools must be simple, accessible, and community-driven.
Beyond academia, Dr. Gogoi’s leadership as Founder Member and Honorary Program Director of Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust has transformed cancer care delivery in Assam. The trust has supported over 4,000 families through palliative home care and provided free consultation to more than 8,000 patients via helplines.
During the COVID-19 crisis, her COVID Sentinel Project, implemented with Assam Police, monitored over 56,000 individuals under home isolation — earning national recognition for public health innovation.
A prolific author, editor, and mentor, Dr. Gogoi has supervised multiple MD and PhD scholars, delivered guest lectures at IISc Bangalore, IIT-Guwahati, AIIMS New Delhi, and presented her work at global platforms including AACR and the World Vaccine Congress.
Recipient of prestigious honours such as the IMA Dr. D.S. Munagekar National Award, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Das Memorial Award, and Swasthya Sewa Samman Award, Dr. Gayatri Gogoi continues to redefine modern medicine — proving that when empathy guides science, healthcare becomes a powerful force for societal transformation.
